Ben Okri has an interesting blueprint for the university of the future (A Time for New Dreams). It is not about the contents, but the skills. In his article, he highlights a few of these;
- The art of Self Discovery
- Students who are able to ask questions
- Connect with Centres of wisdom of yours and others culture
- The art of Reading
- Understanding the source of creativity
- Science of intuition
A fair warming is also stated by Okri;
Discipline, hard work, rationality, calculation, can get us only so far; and in time will become the norm. With it we will produce efficient, but mediocre citizens. These are tools that can be used for good or ill.
Our local Singaporean education is laden with the routine of discipline, hard work, calculation… something which we all know as meritocracy.
As the university of the future may not be available at a place near you, you can take up the challenge on your own. Take up the challenge of personal mastery; “a discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively” (Senge, 1999)
