The Creative Art & Science of Toys

Toys have always fascinated people of all ages: from their early childhood days when such playthings were skilfully handmade and crafted by artisans, to the present day of colourful artefacts made of the most modern, marvellous materials. Many such toys spur young minds in their creativity and play, and often their understanding of performance and concept. For example: walking toys, farm (figure) sets, toys with moving parts or assembling parts. This Café will explore some of these aspects of toys through the ages.

Mr SS Khaw

… has 38 years of experience in the toys trade working with many other foreign partners. He has also kept a collection of interesting toys from the 1950s to the present. As a model engineer with a renowned Japanese model engineering firm and a toy craftsman for the past 35 years, SS has explored the art and acquired the skills of toy representation.

With a passion to highlight how toys are also an expression of science and engineering, SS has most generously contributed some of his collections currently being displayed in Hall A of Science Centre Singapore, in an exhibition called The Science of Toys.
